In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract bringing in the accomplished player.
Financial Terms and Added Benefits
The deal grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16M for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
- Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, enters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite recording often, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that brought home teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a equalizing homer in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
